The first years of life are decisive

During the first five years, the brain develops faster than at any other stage of life. Language, motor skills, social skills, and emotional stability emerge during this sensitive phase.

In many rural regions of South Africa, Zulu is almost exclusively spoken in everyday life. School instruction, however, takes place in English. For many children, therefore, the first day of school begins with a double challenge. New environment. New rules. And a language they barely understand.

The disadvantage does not stem from a lack of talent, but from a lack of preparation.

Early support creates opportunities

With our Early Childhood Development program, we create protected spaces for the youngest children. Places where they can playfully learn, speak, discover, and grow.

An ECD care place means:

  • Early childhood support for language, motor skills, and social behavior
  • Gentle introduction to the English language
  • Structured daily routines and reliable caregivers
  • Healthy meals
  • Preparation for a successful start to school

Children learn English not under pressure, but playfully. Through songs, stories, conversations, and daily repetition. This way, language becomes a tool instead of a barrier.

Minimal costs, great impact

Even approx. €35 can provide a toddler with access to a government-funded "Early Child Development Center" for a year.

Poverty often begins with educational disadvantages

Those who do not understand the language of instruction quickly fall behind. Cognitive and motor underdevelopment also occur. This weakens self-confidence and motivation. Early childhood education compensates for these differences before they become entrenched.

Early Childhood Development is therefore not care in the traditional sense. It is targeted developmental work. It is prevention. It is equal opportunities from the very beginning.

With your donation, you enable a toddler to have a safe place in our ECD program. You invest in language proficiency, self-confidence, and a strong start to school life.

This is where a real future begins.

Thank you for making it possible.

How is impact measured?

We use a comprehensive methodology to measure impact, which is based on qualitative and quantitative data. This includes surveys, interviews, case studies, and statistical analyses. We evaluate the short-term, medium-term and long-term effects of our projects on the target groups and the environment.

How transparently does ROOTS & BRIDGES operate?

For us, transparency is not an add-on, but a fundamental principle.

All uses of funds are based on documented requests from our local partners. Every project funding is reviewed, approved, and clearly allocated.

We regularly report on the progress, developments, and concrete impact of our work. This includes project updates, insights into the Safe Parks, partner reports, and a clear presentation of our administrative structure.

Our goal is not just to demand trust, but to earn it through openness. Donors should understand what their funds are used for and what long-term perspective this creates.

How much of my donation reaches the project?

Of your donation, 85% goes directly into the project work. This includes project expenses, monitoring and evaluation, as well as necessary local administrative costs. The remaining 15% is used for public relations, fundraising, and administration in Germany.
